Organizing

Immigrant Mothers- La Unión's Immigrant Mother Organizing Campaign. The group conducted a survey of immigrant mothers about their experiences navigating the public school system and is part of a city-wide coalition seeking changes in the public education system that will benefit disadvantaged youth.

Workplace Justice- La Unión's Workplace Justice Campaign organized through a "Comite de Trabajadores" (Workers' Committee) is currently dealing with an influx of complaints regarding workplace conditions. The committee combines legal advocacy with community organizing to force employers to pay back wages and respect minimum wage and over time laws. More than 200 workers have joined in picket lines with our organizing resulting in more than $100,000 in claims for back wages.

Environmental Justice- La Unión's Environmental Justice Committee has used community based research methods, such as surveys and home visits, to begin assessing the magnitude of the public health risks posed to new immigrants due to environmental hazards in the home. We found asthma to be the most prevalent health problem amongst those surveyed with over 30% complaining of the condition. The leaders of the Environmental Justice Committee have been instrumental in developing the Asthma-Free Housing Act, a legislative proposal to improve the housing conditions that impact the health of asthmatics.
